Books That Build Skills is a literacy nonprofit and youth development organization helping kids and teens ages 8–14 grow into confident, capable learners through engaging reading experiences, real-world skill building, and meaningful career awareness. Our work combines literacy programs for kids, life skills education for middle school students, and hands-on STEM programs for girls and boys, alongside career exploration and career readiness opportunities that connect learning to the future. Families and educators can also access our middle grade books for purchase, designed to build confidence, creativity, and problem-solving through story, as well as a podcast for teens about careers and life skills that extends learning beyond the page. Together, our books, programs, and media create educational experiences that strengthen reading, leadership, communication, and critical thinking — giving young people the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

ABOUT ATHENIAN FROM 2019 TO 2026

Books That Build Skills. Programs That Build Futures.

Over the past seven years, Athenian has grown from a small, hands-on club program into a national literacy, life-skills and career exploration initiative reaching students across the USA through books, media, and educational programs. What began as in-person workshops teaching girls how things work—from cars to engineering to hands-on building—has evolved into Books That Build Skills powered by Athenian, a story-driven program that teaches life skills, career exploration, and confidence through books, podcasts, and educational resources.

Each stage of growth added something new: hands-on programs, driving simulators, camps, curriculum, books, and now a career exploration YouTube show. While the tools have changed, the mission has not. Books That Build Skills powered by Athenian exists to help young people—especially girls—build real-world skills, explore careers, and discover what they are capable of doing and becoming.

Our bird’s-eye shift toward literacy came after we were confronted with a staggering reality: only one out of three 8th graders in the United States can read at grade level. That is not just an education issue—it is a life outcome issue. We realized that if students are going to build confidence, explore careers, and change their future, literacy has to come first. The question became: how do you help students want to read? Our answer was story. By creating a character who faces challenges, makes decisions, solves problems, and explores careers, readers begin to see themselves in the story. And when students see themselves in a story, they keep reading. And when they keep reading, their world gets bigger.

That is what Athenian builds. Skills, confidence, and futures—one story at a time.

Athenian Testimonials

Heleina Athena Racing Student Advisory Board President 2021

Being Athenian is one of the most amazing opportunities out there. It allows me to speak with knowledgeable, inspiring role models who have been more than happy to help answer any career path questions. It allows me to fine tune real world skills and learn about entrepreneurship, collaboration, business, planning, and more. It connects me with an abundance of resources to help prepare me for life after high school and college. I especially love the amazing group we have on the Student Advisory Board, and I am always inspired by each and every one of the members through their drive to succeed and learn.

~ Heleina, Student Advisory Board President 2021-22

Akshaya Koramutla Athena Racing Student Advisory Board 1

Being Athenian is so important to me because they have helped me grow into a more confident person! I get to meet and work with STEM role models and learn more about the different jobs related to STEM! One of my favorite quotes was said by Sreeja Nair of Qualcomm,  “You can lead from any chair.” I really enjoyed it because it made me realize that I don’t need to wait until I have more power to achieve what I want. I realized, if I really wanted, I could make anything possible. I could make use of what I have and achieve great things in life. From a girl’s perspective, this means a lot, because not many women work in stem related jobs. With Athenian, we get to experience different fields and find out what our interests are. Everyone is so kind and they all help me grow!

~Akshaya, Student Advisory Board President 2022-23

athena racing tanisi student advisory board 2021

Being Athenian is important to me because it gives me an experience that nothing else can. It is an amazing opportunity for me to learn about working life, experience entrepreneurship, learn about STEM job opportunities, and meet business role models. I am also starting to explore the world from different perspectives. The exposure to a new group of friends, outside of school, gives me the chance for friendships that  may last a lifetime.

~Tanisi, Student Advisory Board Secretary 2021-22

anaya athena racing student advisory board 2021

Being Athenian is important to me because it helps spread awareness about girls in STEM, and empowers us to follow our dreams. This is important because often, girls, in particular, don’t have the opportunity to unleash their full potential and are not exposed to the various career paths that are available.

~Anaya, Student Advisory Board 2021-22

Surabhi student advisory board 2021

Being Athenian is important to me because I am really going places with it. Being an active Athenian, I know I will have better clarity of the future, collaborate with others well and be prepared for things in the future I didn’t even know existed. In other words, ” I will be light years beyond my peers” as Ms. Loxley says, and she is right. Even though I have only been in this program for some time I have already felt the impact. I feel inspired to do nearly everything, I am no longer afraid to speak to someone new, or ask for help. I even learned how to do an elevator pitch!
